July 2010
We had two open houses in July! One was the new layout of Mike Woodley's on July18th and the other was the well established layout of the Grundmann's the following week on July 24th & 25th (Werner & Ingrid host both the "Greater Vancouver Garden Railway Club" and the "Vancouver Island Garden Railway Club" so they have an open house on two days so it will fit most people)
Mike Woodley's setup is in a raised bed. The area is small but with the track crossing over itself twice in the form of a of double figure 8, he has created a long run. The track is set up to represent three distinct areas of western Canada's CP rail line. The spiral tunnels, Lethtbridge Viaduct and the Myra Canyon. His layout is a work in progress, but it is coming along great. On this day he was controlling his dc track power with a small starter set transformer as his wireless control unit was not working. He also had one of the early Bachman radio -controlled battery operated ten wheelers, which ran flawlessly. One train delivered lemon aid to the visitors. Mike has arranged a spur along the fence where he can run his engines onto special totes (that he has made) to move them to storage. The view out over the ocean was great even with a little fog.
Werner Grundmann's Layout is a very long loop that crosses over it self as it climbs up the mountainside and then descends. As the train traverses through the loop, it goes through many different and defined scenes, from millponds with a sawmill, farmland to mountain resorts. This is mostly European flair, except for the logging areas that are North American complete with geared Climaxes and Shay steam engines. This day Werner was running his White Pass & Yukon Equipment. His two Shovel Nose Diesels were pulling a long line of Passenger cars and the Alco was pulling the work train complete with the bunkhouses for the crew. There is a point-to-point cog line, also a point-to-point rail bus line. These are both automatic.
